Pharmacists say expanding their role in the community holds the key to resolving the crisis in the Health Service.
The Irish Pharmacy Union says the greater use of Pharmacists could mean millions of fewer visits to hospitals and GPs - by reducing unnecessary visits.
There are over 20 million visits to GPs every year in Ireland, and Pharmacists say while most of these are necessary, many patients could be helped, at a significantly reduced cost, at their pharmacy.
The IPU says the roll out of the flu vaccination service and the availability of Emergency contraception in pharmacies shows they can deliver services in a cost-effective way.
