It's hoped debris - which could be from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 - will arrive in France by the end of the week.
Experts in Toulouse will try to verify the object as quickly as possible.
The jet vanished last March, with all 239 people on board presumed dead.
There have also been reports a badly damaged suitcase was found near the debris - on the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
But Australian deputy prime minister Warren Truss is urging caution.
