They say a week is a long time in politics. Rarely has that been truer in the week just gone.

On Thursday of LAST week, only a handful of insiders knew about a file held by a sttae agency, containing false allegations of sex abuse against a Garda whistleblower.

By Thursday of THIS week, the crisis over its political handling - and a confused, contradictory tale of who knew what, and when - had almost caused the government to collapse... twice.

In the meantime the country is left revulsed by revelations of a major effort, apparently led by some of the highest powers in the land, to blacken the name of a Garda who called out wrongdoing by his colleagues.

And that crisis has left a Taoiseach, in charge of his country for six years and in charge of his party for 15, now looking like he's on borrowed time.

If a week is a long time in politics, the last one must feel like an eternity... which makes it a good week to kick off Today FM's brand new weekly podcast series.
