Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have reportedly identified a new suspect.

Portuguese media claims extra detectives have been drafted in as a result of information supplied by Scotland Yard.

The name of the suspect has not been made public - but local newspaper reports suggest police are investigating a paedophile, who was in the area at the time of her disappearance.

Madeline disappeared from her bed on the 3rd of May 2007 in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal.

One paper described the case as "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history."

Friday marked the 12th anniversary of her disappearance, and in a statement, her parents Kate and Gerry said:

"As much as we’d like to fast forward the first couple of weeks of May, there’s no getting around it."

"The months and years roll by too quickly - Madeleine will be sixteen this month."

"It’s impossible to put into words just how that makes us feel. There is comfort and reassurance though in knowing that the investigation continues and many people around the world remain vigilant."
