Hooded gunmen have fired on police in the French city of Marseille where the country's Prime Minister is due to visit.

Witnesses say armed men fired Kalashnikovs into the air.

Around 40 police officers are reported to be positioned on a roundabout.

A Police source has confirmed elite security forces have been sent to the scene.
