Polls have opened in the local, European and two Dáil by-elections.

Voters across the country are electing candidates to fill seats in local authorities and the European parliament, as well as two seats in Dáil Éireann.

Just over 2,500 people living on islands off the west coast were entitled to vote yesterday, but an estimated three million people living on the mainland are entitled to vote today.

Over 2,000 candidates are running to fill 949 seats on city and county councils - most of which now have more members than ever before.

There are also two by-elections for the Dáíl - one in Longford-Westmeath, where nine candidates are running, and one in Dublin West, where there are ten nominated candidates.

Ireland is also one of the first countries in the EU to go to the polls to fill its seats in the next European Parliament.

There are 12 candidates in the running for the three seats in Dublin, 14 looking to fill four seats in Midlands North-West, and 15 candidates running in Ireland South where there are four seats available.

Polling closes at 10 tonight, with counting in the Dáil by-elections and local elections beginning tomorrow, while the European ballots will be counted on Sunday.
