The pop superstar Prince has died at his home in Minneapolis.

The news was confirmed by the music legend's agent. 

Local police say emergency services were called to his Paisley Park complex in the early hours of the morning.

The 57-year-old had cancelled recent gigs because of health concerns.

He sold an estimated 100 million records in a career that peaked in the 80's with a string of hit songs and albums like Purple Rain and Sign o' the Times.

Outside his home, in a suburb of Minneapolis, locals have been gathering to pay their respects.
