Pope Francis has confirmed he will visit Ireland in 2018.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny held a 30 minute private meeting with the Pontiff in the Vatican earlier.

Pope Francis has confirmed he will make an official visit to Ireland in August 2018.

It is unclear as of yet if he will visit the North too.

The last Pontiff to travel to Ireland was Pope John Paul II in 1979.
