An Post is advising people not to post any mail today due to industrial action.

Staff members responsible for equipment in the company's mail centres are striking over cuts in pay.

The 36 staff are members of the Communications Workers' Union.

An Post says due to the withdrawal of labour they are unable to process mail for delivery to customers.

Mail deliveries are operating as normal today however.

In a statement IO Systems - the maintenance contractor at the An Post mailing centres says the industrial action is in total breach of a Labour Court recomendation.

IO Systems calls the action pointless.

However the CWU has described the An Post decision to shut down services as Bizzare and reckless. it says the move will have "long term damaging consequences for postal services in Ireland and industrial relations at the Company."

The CWU wants a Special Investigator from the C&AG’s office to be appointed to examine the process for the awarding of the IO Systems contract by An Post.
