Barack Obama has held a historic first meeting with Pope Francis saying he's a "great admirer".

The US President arrived at the Vatican amid pomp and tradition, after a long, slow procession led by colourful Swiss Guards.

The President and the Pope were scheduled to meet for half an hour, but their private discussion lasted 52 minutes.
