The President has signed abortion legislation into law.
The Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill has been signed by Michael D Higgins a week after it completed its passage through the Dáil and Seanad.
Services will start becoming available from January 1st.
The legislation allows abortions for up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy, and in very limited circumstances - such as when there is a risk to the life of the pregnant woman - after that.
Thousands of doctors were issued with clinical guidelines on abortion services yesterday as preparations continue for the introduction of services.
Speaking after the President signed the bill into law, Health Minister Simon Harris said today is 'historic'.
