PSNI Launch Murder Investigation After Police Officer Shot In Tyrone

Police in Northern Ireland have launched an attempted murder investigation after an off-duty officer was shot in Co Tyrone.

The shooting happened last night just outside Omagh.

The PSNI have confirmed that the off-duty police officer who was shot multiple times last night was Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

He was attacked by two masked men as he was putting away training gear into the boot of his car.

A number of youth sports teams were here training at the complex at the time of the shooting. While the victims son is understood to have been with him at the time.

Mr Caldwell is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Derry.

Police say the dissident Republican group, the new IRA, are the primary focus of their investigation.
