Ireland could be breaking its own laws by allowing children to live in Direct Provision.

That's according to the government's special rapporteur on children, who says the practice could also be a breach of international law.

Geoffrey Shannon is also urging the government to close a legal loophole which makes it difficult to prosecute against forced marriages involving children.

The call is made in his latest report, which has been published by the government after being cleared at cabinet this week.

Mr Shannon's also raised concerns at the number of court orders for children to be taken into care immediately after being born.

He says many parents wouldn't have enough time to mount a proper legal defence, if an order is sought just after a baby has been born.

There has been criticism at the timing of the publication of Mr Shannon's report - with some claims that the government has been stifling the report for months, and refusing to release it until many of its criticisms no longer apply.
