Questions are being raised about the future of childcare in Ireland, after TuesdayÂ’s budget announced a universal subsidy for infants up to 3 years.

Early Childhood Ireland says much more investment will be needed to cope with extra demand for places and staff.

While some question the universality of the payment, as it only applies to registered childminders and crèches.
