The Referendum Commission has denied giving contradictory advice about the impact of the same-sex marriage referendum.
A spokesman said remarks this morning by Justice Kevin Cross did not contradict comments made in a newspaper interview last week.
The Mothers & Fathers Matter group, advocating a No vote, says it’s contradictory to say that the referendum is not about surrogacy, while also saying it would limit the ability of the Oireachtas to give preference to opposite-sex couples.
The Commission says that while the Oireachtas would need a fact-based reason to discriminate against same-sex couples in areas like surrogacy, it would not be impossible to do so.
Meanwhile a campaigner against same-sex marriage says more politicians would admit they oppose it - but for "political correctness gone mad".
Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames is the only female member of the Oireachtas campaigning for a No vote.
