Hungary's offered to transport thousands of refugees by bus to the Austrian border in the next few hours.
Many have decided to set off on the long walk - frustrated at the lack of trains out of the country, which had been cancelled indefinitely.
Buses are being sent to the main train station in Budapest and to pick up those walking along a motorway.
Meanwhile Hungarians trying to help the refugees have started taking them into their homes.
They even include the country's former prime minister - Ferenc Gyurcsany;
