Tens of thousands of children are apparently going to primary school lacking social skills, with speech problems and even poor personal hygiene.

Research for primary school leaders in the UK has concluded that almost a third of new starters aren't considered to be ready for the classroom.

Some heads say young pupils are arriving without toilet training, while others "know how to swipe a phone but haven't a clue about conversations".
