A report to be published this afternoon will accuse Gardaí of massaging national figures on crime.

The report from the Garda Inspectorate will claim that Gardaí downgrade the significance of some crimes, because of a lack of clear guidelines.

The report is being considered by cabinet today before its official publication this afternoon.

It says the problem of massaged figures is more rampant in some areas than others - which in turn could have an impact on whether some members in that area could be promoted.

The report is also said to find evidence that Gardaí sometimes fail to act on reports of crime - with claims that reports of domestic violence are ignored - while other incidents are not recorded on Pulse.

The document needs to go to cabinet first because it's also set to recommend a major internal overhaul in how the Garda force is organised.

It's expected to change the current system, where a single superintendent is responsible for all crime management in a particular area.

Instead, senior officers will take responsibility for specific types of crime in a division - with regional officers responsible for the likes of traffic, drugs and violent crime.
