At least 20 people are now known to have died after a gunman opened fire on a nightclub in Florida - police say they're investigating the possibility that it was a terrorist incident.

Over forty people have been taken to hospital following the attack.

Police say the suspect was shot and killed by officers responding to the incident in Orlando in the early hours.

Bomb disposal teams carried out a "controlled explosion" during the course of the incident - it's also understood that hostages were taken for a time.

Police Chief John Mina gave this update a short time ago:

As the attacker struck the bar in the Florida city, the club issued a statement on its Facebook page saying: "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

The mayor of Orlando, Buddy Dyer told reporters the local community need to "stand strong and be supportive of the victims and their families" following the horrific attack.
