It's reported that a Russian jet - shot down by Turkey - was inside Syrian airspace when it happened.
A US official says the assessment was based on the jet's heat signature.
The plane did briefly enter Turkish airspace too.
Russian President Vladimir Putin says there will be "serious consequences".
But President Obama has criticised Russia, claiming it's been targeting moderate opposition groups in Syria.
