Ukraine delays swearing in of new leader

Ukraine's interim leader has delayed the appointment of a new unity government until Thursday.

A new cabinet and a new Prime minister had been due to be unveiled today.

However the interim president Oleksandr Turchynov told legislators that a coalition of national faith must be elected on Thursday.

The country is struggling to find a way out of its most serious crisis since independence.

In the US the White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama is preoccupied with promoting a non violent process in Ukraine.

Mr Carney stressed to reporters that the United States believes Russian President Vladimir Putin, with whom Obama spoke on the crisis on Friday, has an interest in ensuring a peaceful transition of power in Kiev.

"There is no contradiction in Ukraine and Ukraine's people deciding to move forward with further integration with Europe while Ukraine and the Ukrainian people maintain their strong historic cultural and economic ties to Russia."

"We believe that's entirely appropriate."

Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has condemned the removal of President Yanukovich - calling it an 'armed mutiny'.

He's also criticised the West for recognising the interim government in Kiev.

But Ukraine's ambassador to the U.N. - Yuriy Sergeyev - says his remarks are 'absurd' - and the protesters had clearly shown that they'd had enough:
