Barnardos are encouraging people across Ireland to get active and help change the lives of vulnerable children across Ireland as part of their new ‘Be Brave for Barnardos’ campaign. They are asking the public to take on a challenge that suits them and to turn it into a fundraiser for Barnardos.

Ambassador for Barnardos Richard Sadlier is one of many aiming to Be Brave for Barnardos but Richard is being a bit braver than most. In fact, he could well be going against all known medical advice as he is going to run a 5k with no training and not only that, in the early 2000’s the former footballer turned writer and TV pundit was told to never run again or his hip would literally disintegrate!

As Richard explained to Neil Delamere on the Anton Savage Show today, he has been warned hundreds of times not to run, but the temptation of the odd five-a-side and now, Barnardos ‘Be Brave Challenge’ proved too much. He will have support, of course, so as they say, don;t try this at home, but do try something for Barnardos.

In 2015, Barnardos worked with more than 11,718 children and families in over 40 centres across Ireland in 2015, supporting and helping them to change their lives. It is the most they’ve ever worked with 340 more children seen to in 2015 than in 2014.

For the ‘Be Brave’ campaign they are asking people to take on an exciting challenge in 2016, and do it for Barnardos.  It could be adventure on the hills, a mud covered endurance, learn an instrument, a couch-to-5k run, an Iron Man, or even learning a new skill. Barnardos want you to use your new challenge, goal or New Years Resolution to help change the lives of vulnerable children across Ireland.

Whether it’s a personal challenge or something you’d like to do with friends or workmates, funds raised will go a long way in supporting our work with thousands of children and families across Ireland.

Of course, when you have Richard Sadlier in the studio, you have to ask him about football, and Neil was keen to hear Sadlier’s take on Ireland’s prospects at Euro 2016, the boredom factor at Manchester United, what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a bollocking from the manager and the fans and more besides.

He also revealed his moving and poignant FA Cup story about the year Millwall made it to the FA Cup Final and asked Richard to lead them out.

Richard had returned that season after a series of hip injuries, aged just 24. He was THE hot prospect for club and country and a firm favourite at Millwall. They wanted him to lead out the team for the final instead of their manager at the time, Denis Wise. Richard, unlike players like John Terry, declined.
