The Scottish public has emphatically voted against Independence.

55 per cent of Scots have voted to stay in the United Kingdom - with 45 per cent voting to go it alone.

SNP leader Alex Salmond has conceded defeat - and Prime Minister David Cameron will make a TV address in the next few minutes.

From the central count centre in Edinburgh, Richard Chambers reports:

Scotland's first Minister Alex Salmond has conceded defeat in the Scottish Independence referendum.

He thanked the 1.6 million Scots who voted Yes for Independence, but says Scotland has by majority decided not to go it alone, and he says he'll accept the democratic verdict of the people of Scotland. 

And he insists the promises made by Westminster to try and sway voters in recent days must be kept:
