The Seanad's rejected calls for the tourism minister to intervene in the dispute over the Garth Brooks concerts.

Senators voted 32-16 against a bid from Fianna Fáil to ask Leo Varadkar to make an immediate statement on the matter.

Fianna Fáil says immediate action is needed, given that 70,000 tourists from overseas were planning on attending the run of five concerts in Croke Park.

Seanad leader Maurice Cummins says politicians shouldn't be interfering in planning decisions made by local authorities.

"Planning is a reserve function of the manager [of Dublin City Council]," he said.

Referring to the title of one of Garth Brooks' best-known hits, he added:

"The proposal to have an appeal system to the minister is politicising him again in my opinion - it's actually looking for someone to go to Friends in High Places to deal with it, which I certainly wouldn't agree with."
