Man dies in diving accident off Cork

One man has died and a search is underway for a second man after a diving accident off the West Cork coast this morning.

The two men were diving  the wreck of a submarine 4 miles South of Castlehaven near Baltimore in Co Cork when they got into difficulty.

The alarm was raised at 9:40 a.m. by members of their crew boat after they failed to resurface.

The rescue helicopter and RNLI boats and the Naval vessel the LE Aisling were all tasked to the scene to assist in teh seach.

Shortly after 10 am one of the men was located and he was airlifted to Cork University Hospital.  Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead on arrival.

 

The search for the second man is continuing in calm seas off the coast.  Conditions have been described as good with good visibility.

A team of Naval divers is also en route.
