Secondary schools may close for teacher strike

Secondary school teachers have voted to go on strike over the planned reform of the Junior Cycle.

Members of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland have voted overwhelmingly in favour of extending their industrial action.

The planned changes to the Junior Cert include the ablition of the state exam - to be replaced with school-based exams - marked by the pupils' own teachers.

Today's ballot result means that both second-level teacher unions have voted to extend the current industrial action to include strikes.

General Secretary of ASTI, Pat King says they still plan to meet with the Education Minister this month, and he's denying the strike is a threat to Jan O'Sullivan;
