Second-level teachers have voted to engage in industrial action over plans to abolish the Junior Certificate State Exam

It's in response to the plan by Education Minister Ruairi Quinn to replace the examination with a new programme.

The framework for the Junior Cycle is due to be implemented in schools from this September.

The two unions represent around 27,000 second-level teachers.

In a statement issued this evening, the Education Minister says the working group, which was set up in January is the appropriate forum to address any concerns relating to the reformed Junior Cycle.
