Security at the US embassy in Baghdad has been tightened.
The State Department says some staff are also being moved out of Iraq's capital, which is threatened by the advance of Sunni insurgents.
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the reason for the crisis is down to inaction over Syria.
