Shatter to address whistleblower controversy

The Minister for Justice will today explain his response to allegations of serious Garda misconduct.

Alan Shatter's expected to tell the Dáil that he carried out a thorough investigation into the claims raised by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

The Dáil's spending almost the entire day discussing the claims.

 

Alan Shatter's likely to vigorously contest the claims made by the opposition, who said he did nothing when he received the allegations two years ago.

He'll outline how each of the 12 different claims were investigated - and the reasons why 11 of them were ultimately dropped.

He's also expected to brief TDs on the terms of reference for the independent inquiry being carried out by senior counsel Sean Guerin.

Although Mr Guerin's inquiry won't deal with the penalty points issue, the minister may still discuss it when he addresses the Dáil this morning.

He'll be pressed on his previous claim that whistleblower Maurice McCabe failed to co-operate with the Garda inquiry - which Sgt McCabe himself says isn't true.
