Skellig Michael reopens to the public today for the first time in almost three weeks.

The island off the coast of Kerry was closed following a rockfall.

It was due to reopen on Saturday but the Office of Public Works put it off due to poor weather and rough seas.

Paul Devane from Skellig Michael Cruises says today's reopening's very important for the local economy in county Kerry:

"Up to now, this is only our 17th day of landings. Normally you could get 70 or 80 days.

"If it's a really good summer we can maybe get 100 days but we won't come anywhere near that this year.

"We're hoping we maybe get the month of July and August to get out there.

"It's a big boost for South Kerry."
