The makers of Star Wars are returning to Ireland.

Lucasfilm has announced it's coming back to film several sequences for Star Wars - Episode VIII on location along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Exactly where the filming will take place hasn't been revealed.

Scenes from 'The Force Awakens' were filmed on Skellig Michael in Co Kerry generating over €4 million euro for the economy.

The Irish Film Board has welcomed the news.

Chief Executive James Hickey says “The Irish film industry has experienced much success this year on the back of major international awards and nominations for Irish films Room and Brooklyn. We believe that having Star Wars Episode VIII film on location in Ireland will also help to build on this success, creating further opportunities and growth for the Irish film industry, resulting in increased levels of job creation, incoming tourists and foreign direct investment to Ireland."

Star Wars - Episode VIII is due to be released in December 2017.
