State of 'calamity' declared in Philippines

US marines have joined the frantic effort to rescue survivors of the typhoon in the Philippines, after the government declared a national emergency.

Many areas remain cut off three days after the disaster, with devastated communities stuck without food, water and medicines.

The president has declared a national state of calamity, which means the government can quickly release emergency funds and impose price controls.
