Storm Barra Latest: Nearly 60,000 Still Without Power

Nearly 60 thousand homes and businesses remain without power this morning as Storm Barra moves across the country.

The ESB says western counties are worst hit and hopes to have the majority of those affected restored by the end of today.

A status orange warning for strong winds remains in place for Donegal until 2pm with yellow alerts elsewhere.

Schools in 12 counties are staying closed today following government advice.

Minister of state with responsibility for local government and planning, Peter Burke, says the late announcement of Dublin schools closing was correct.

"The orange status warning only lifted at 7am so principals have to assess any damage to ensure public safety is put first". he says.
