92% of TV shows showed someone smoking in the in the 2016-17 season, up from 79% in the previous one.

A study by  US anti-smoking group Truth Initiative found that Stranger Things on Netflix was the worst offender with 100% of episodes including tobacco.

It found that Netflix depicted more smoking imagery than other streaming services or broadcast shows and that figure is rising.

On, Netflix Orange is the New Black was the second worst offender followed by  House of Cards while The Walking Dead showed the most smoking on broadcast and cable TV.

The Irish Cancer Society says there should be a warning on TV shows that depict smoking similar to the one for product placement.

Donal Buggy from the ICS says 'Parents can then make the choice as to whether their children should be allowed to watch that show'.

However, John Mallon from smokers rights group Forest Ireland says that violence on TV is a bigger issue than smoking. 'Television and film is art and art mirrors life. I would be far more concerned about the level of violence on film and TV.

In a statement Netflix says it promises to cut back on the amount of smoking it shows going forward.
