A fifth of parents have admitted leaving 8 to 9-year-olds alone overnight in the past year.

A survey, by the insurers Churchill in the UK, says three-quarters would leave a child under 16 unsupervised during the day.

The NSPCC advises that babies and young children should never be left alone.
