A major search operation for a swimmer who has gone missing in Galway Bay has wound down for the night.
The alarm was raised just before 5 pm when a 40 year old local man got into difficulty off Blackrock in Salthill.
The RNLI and the Irish Coastguard are among the agencies involved in the search, which will resume in the morning.
The Shannon-based Rescue 115 Irish Coastguard helicopter is expected back on scene tomorrow.
The area where the man went missing is popular with swimmers and does not have major currents, according to the RNLI.
