A Russia-backed deal to set up "de-escalation zones" in mostly opposition-held areas in Syria has come into effect.

The agreement is supported by Turkey and Iran.

But the initiative is opposed by Syria's opposition, because of Tehran's involvement.

It includes plans for armed monitors on the ground.

A monitoring group has said shelling and gunfire were heard overnight in a rebel-held area in the north-west of the country.
