Tanaiste adds to pressure on Garda Commissioner

The Tánaiste says she has 'no doubt' the Garda Commissioner will clarify exactly what instructions she gave her legal team, in their dealings with whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

Frances Fitzgerald says Noirin O'Sullivan will give information about her instructions to her lawyers at the O'Higgins Commission - if it is legal and feasible to do so.

The comments this morning further add to the pressure on the Garda Commissioner, who has been under attack after it emerged last week her lawyers had told the O'Higgins Commission they intended to claim Sergeant McCabe was acting out of malice when he raised his concerns about Garda malpractice.

Yesterday evening it emerged the Commissioner's legal team had later back-tracked - and said the claim that McCabe was acting out of malice was an honest mistake.

However, last night RTE's Prime Time obtained more transcripts of legal argument at the Commission - where the Commissioner's lawyers had repeatedly insisted it was their instruction to claim the whistleblower was acting out of malice.

The argument was only dropped on the morning in which the Commissioner herself was due to give evidence.
