The Taoiseach and British Prime Minister spoke over the phone this morning about the current state of the Brexit negotiations.
According to the Department of An Taoiseach, both leaders remain committed to avoiding a hard border while also acknowledging the need for a legally operable backstop.
Over the course of their conversation, Theresa May did raised the possibility of a review mechanism for the backstop.
Leo Varadkar indicated an openness to consider proposals for a review, provided it was clear that the outcome of any such review could not involve a unilateral decision to end the backstop.
He reiterated the previous commitments that the backstop must apply "unless and until" alternative arrangements are agreed.
They both expressed the hope that the negotiations could conclude in a satisfactory manner as soon as possible.
