ENDA KENNY'S OFFICE has received the final report into the resignation of the Garda Commissioner.

It's been confirmed that the report from the Fennelly Commission was received at the Department of the Taoiseach this evening.

The report deals with the series of events and meetings that led to Martin Callinan controversially stepping down as Ireland's top Garda in March 2014.

Specifically it examines a letter sent by Callinan to the former Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, on March 10 last year - where he relayed his discovery of widespread phone call recordings being taken at Garda stations.

Two weeks later Shatter's top civil servant, secretary general Brian Purcell, was sent to Callinan's home to relay the government's concerns at the taping system - but it has never been clear whether the politicians were, at that time, aware that Callinan had sought to inform the government about the subject two a fortnight earlier.

In a statement this evening the Department of the Taoiseach said Enda Kenny was obliged to "have the report reviewed by the Attorney General's office to determine if there is any impact on pending or ongoing criminal proceedings".

"The position remains, as the Taoiseach has always said, that the report will be published as soon as possible in accordance with the law," it said.
