Taoiseach: Reduce Socialising To Manage Omicron Spread

The Taoiseach says Ireland has a "very good chance" of managing the Omicron variant if socialisation reduces by between 20 and 30 per cent.

Ministers will meet this morning to sign off on enhanced financial supports for businesses in the hospitality and events sector affected by the new Covid restrictions.

75,000 vaccine boosters were administered yesterday.

Micheál Martin says we can avoid further restrictions if the country sticks with the current measures.

He said its their aim to cut socialisaton by 20 to 30 percent to take back control of the spread.

Covid Rates High Among Young Adults

Young people struggling to get a booster's partly to blame for rising Covid case numbers in their age cohort, according to an immunology expert.

The Chief Medical Officer says the incidence rate among 16 to 34 year olds is the highest since the pandemic began.

Currently, those under 40 can only get a vaccine from their GP, but they've been asked to prioritise older people.

Professor of Immunovirology at UCC, Liam Fanning, says a booster should be available to all age groups now the majority of over 50s are done.

"It's not too late just to open it up to everyone."

"We can't ask people to continually restrict and restrict when there is - we are told  - no shortage of vaccines."

He said the impediment to the roll out appears to be logistics.
