TDs criticise O'Brien over new legal challenge

TDs from across the political divide have spoken out to support their colleagues who are being hit with legal action by Denis O'Brien.

The businessman is taking a High Court case, over what he believes was the abuse of Dáil privilege by TD Catherine Murphy.

But a cabinet minister is among the politicians who are condemning the move, which is being labelled as an attack on the rights of TDs to speak freely in the chamber.

The case centres around the refusal of the Dáil's disciplinary committee, the Committee on Procedures and Privileges (CPP), to take action against Catherine Murphy over her claims about Denis O'Brien's banking arrangements with IBRC.

Mr O'Brien - who also owns Today FM - believes the comments were an abuse of privilege, but the CPP rejected his complaint - so he is now taking action against the CPP's members, and the State itself, over what he believes is its failure to stop parliamentary privilege from being abused.
