A male teenager has died after a single vehicle crash near Louisburgh in Co.Mayo early this morning.

The crash happened near Clare Island at approximately 1am.

Gardai say the road remains closed for a technical examination.

They are appealing for anyone with information to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 50230 or the Garda Confidential Line.

The crash comes as the Road Safety Authority warns drivers to take extra care over the bank holiday weekend.

The RSA says statistics show that Sunday is one of the worst days of the week for fatalities on Irish roads, particularly for motorcylists.
