A teenager is to appear before a special sitting of Waterford District Court this afternoon charged in connection with a serious assault in the city.

An 18 year man had to undergo emergency surgery following the assault on John Street on Wednesday night.

He is being treated in University Hospital, Waterford.

An 18 year old man, who was being questioned by Gardaí, will appear in court later.

A 19 year old, also detained by Gardai, was released without charge last night.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
