The organisation that represents middle-ranking gardai has published a graphic photo of a member to show the dangers of front line policing.
Sergeant Dave Haughney sustained a serious eye-injury while on duty in Middleton in Co. Cork last year.
The Association of Garda sergeants and Inspectors paid tribute to Sergeant Haughney, who has more than 20 years’ experience, at their annual conference in Trim, Co. Meath.
The conference dealt with issues around pay, recruitment and resources, but AGSI wanted to show the face of policing to the public.
Vice President of AGSI Willie Gleeson says Sergeant Haughney has long-lasting effects from the injury;He went on to say;
“We need manpower out there to ensure the safety of the public but also the safety of our own colleagues.'He’s an outstanding police officer, as are all of his colleagues. He is a big strong man and has taken this burden on him with great dignity and that is to his credit."
