A new poll out today shows the majority of people are in favour of repealing our abortion legislation.

A citizens Assembly will meet later this month to consider the future of the law.

The Ipsos/MRBI survey in the Irish Times claims 55 percent believe the 8th Amendment should be changed to allow for limited abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality and rape.

19 per cent think there should be terminations on demand, as in the UK.

However there's still 18 percent that don't want to repeal the 8th Amendment, and 8 percent had no opinion.

There was no major difference in opinion between men and women on the issue, with women slightly more in favour of leaving the law as it is.

Strongest support for repealing the 8th is in Dublin with young people more in favour than older people

A Citizens' Assembly is meeting later this month to discuss the issue and to consider holding a referendum to change the constitution.
