Three teenagers are being questioned by Gardaí in Athlone after two violent incidents in the town.

A taxi driver in his seventies was stabbed in the early hours of Tuesday morning after picking up two males on Church Street in the town.

That evening, a gang armed with a gun and an iron bar threatened and assaulted an elderly shop keeper at a business on the Ballymahon Road.

Both men were released from hospital after treatment.
