The Irish Blood Transfusion Service says changes have been made to its IT system to allow transgender donors to present as their chosen gender.
It’s after a transgender woman waited for a year to have her details changed on the computer system.
The IBTS says changing a name on the system is no problem and happens regularly, but changing gender has proven more challenging because a donor's gender has an impact on how donated blood is used for patients.
