Gardai are advising motorists to exercise caution with road conditions described as treacherous in parts of the country due to flooding.

Met Éireann has issued two weather warnings - with a status orange alert in place in Leinster and counties Cavan and Monaghan.

And there's a status yellow rainfall warning for Tipperary and Waterford.

Heavy rain, ranging from 25 -to- 50 millimetres, has fallen in places with up to another 6 centimetres expected.

In Dublin, spot flooding has been reported around Santry, Malahide and Clontarf with excess surface water also causing problems around counties Offaly, Meath, Longford and Co. Louth.

And Gardai say two people being held in Ballymun Garda Station in Dublin had to be evacuated this morning due to flooding.

The detainees were transferred from their cells to another garda station after flood water of up to 10mm covered the floors in the station.

The station is now fully operational following the precautionary measure.
