The Garda Commissioner has paid tribute to Tony Golden - who was murdered in the line of duty in Co Louth yesterday.

He was shot dead in Omeath as he went to the home of a woman who had made a domestic incident complaint.

Her partner - 24-year-old gunman Adrian Crevan Mackin - was out on bail after being charged with membership of a dissident republican group.

The woman - who is also in her 20s - was critically wounded - while Mackin died from his wounds.

Garda Commissioner Nóirín OÂ’Sullivan says itÂ’s a ‘sad and tragic dayÂ’ for the force - and she will visit both Tony GoldenÂ’s family and the scene of the shooting later.

Commissioner O’Sullivan says it’s an ‘unthinkable’ day for Garda Golden’s wife and three young children.

The President, Michael D Higgins says he’s deeply shocked and appalled at the death of a Garda in the line of duty.
